Trauma Therapy

Is Underlying Trauma Intruding On Your Life?

Do you regularly feel on edge or triggered, even in otherwise normal situations?

Did something happen to you that was sudden, shocking, or painful?

As a result, are you experiencing hypervigilance, dysregulated emotions, or an inability to trust?

When we live through something that’s intensely stressful or life-altering, we can develop certain patterns, habits, or defense mechanisms to reinforce a sense of safety in our lives. Grappling with feelings of insecurity and self-doubt, our mental health suffers as we experience an ongoing, looming sense of discomfort that is difficult to articulate. When an array of symptoms converge—including depression, anxiety, panic, and relational dysfunction—trauma may be the culprit.

How Is Trauma Manifesting In Your Life?

If you went through something distressing, you might often try to maintain a sense of control over your surroundings, whether you dwell over worst-case scenarios or avoid certain people, places, or situations. Maybe you use food or substances to numb your true emotions. Or perhaps you blame yourself for what happened or not being “over it” yet.

When stress and trauma are left unprocessed, it can create profound feelings of shame and self-criticism. Depression is common among trauma survivors, often presenting as self-destructive or self-harm behaviors, feelings of worthlessness, or a sense of despair. Physical symptoms of anxiety can bubble up, taking the form of intense fear, nightmares, flashbacks, and an inability to relax. The longer these symptoms go untreated, the more they run the risk of impairing your work performance, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Fortunately, trauma is treatable. Mindful Lotus Therapy uses highly effective treatment methods to better understand your trauma, how it’s affecting you and what you need to heal.

Humans Have A Way Of Minimizing Our Traumas

Our culture tends to define trauma pretty narrowly, often in terms of life-threatening experiences such as accidents, assaults, natural disasters, violence, and abuse. Yet, there are many other common situations from which trauma can develop, including death, divorce, chronic illness, hospitalization, and even workplace stress. We live in a culture that normalizes intense pressure and a lack of work-life balance—many of us are living with the effects of unresolved trauma simply by undergoing the stress of modern life.

That said, trauma is a subjective experience; what’s traumatic for one person may be experienced differently by someone else. What makes something traumatic is how the mind and body process the situation. Trauma needs individualized treatment focusing on core issues and reintegrating the experience in a way that will resolve the symptoms and pave the way toward a happier and healthier life.

At Mindful Lotus Therapy, We Are Passionate About Helping Clients Overcome The Effects Of Trauma

Trauma hurts on a deep and profound level, often making it difficult to face. As therapists trained in highly effective, trauma-informed approaches, we are here to create an open, compassionate atmosphere where you can explore your experiences and learn new ways to cope. We will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you while also creating a foundation of skills that are designed to make your stress and emotions more manageable.

Our counseling services are available to all who have suffered various forms of trauma, 12 years and older. In-person counseling is available for clients local to the Davie, Florida, area, while online trauma therapy is available for those throughout Florida and New Jersey.

Our Approach

A primary therapy modality we use for trauma is called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). As a method that was developed specifically to help trauma survivors struggling with PTSD, this treatment uses side-to-side eye movement (bilateral stimulation) to reprocess the way that trauma is stored in the brain. Many clients using this therapy experience a reduction in trauma-related symptoms quickly. (To learn more, read our EMDR page.)

Alongside EMDR, behavioral approaches like Trauma Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (T-CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) will help you expand your window of tolerance as you develop new, more adaptive self-beliefs. Mindfulness and calming skills are also used to help regulate your stress and emotions, especially as intrusive memories arise.

Our supportive, individualized treatment approach to therapy can make a meaningful difference in how your trauma is experienced and reprocessed. As you learn and implement lasting skills to handle distress, you can heal the pain of your past and face the future with confidence.
